On Sept. 19th, our speaker was Peggy Brock. She is a trauma nurse who volunteers for Samaritan’s Purse. Samaritan’s Purse is an evangelical Christian humanitarian aid organization that provides aid to people in physical need. It was founded in 1970 by Bob Pierce. The organization’s president is Franklin Graham, son of Christian evangelist Billy Graham. They work in more than 100 countries around the world. Volunteers come from all over the world to staff the hospitals. There are 3 of them. The one Peggy worked at was in Mosul Iraq. They treated all patients the same, whether they were ISIS combatants, or civilian adults and children. They perform multiple surgeries a day. And sometimes they double up in the same room. Most civilians cannot afford to go to a hospital. They do not turn anyone away. When hospital staff go on strike in some countries, the hospitals are shut down. Samaritan’s Purse has turned over a $7 million dollar hospital to the Iraqi government in Sept. of 2017. Peggy also shared with us, the resilience of the volunteer staff, who often times work under threat to their own safety. We were all captivated to learn of her time in Iraq.
