Guest Speaker: Debbie George & Michelle Thornburg | Corona, CA

Wed Aug 22, 2018

Our meeting today welcomed two guest speakers that are advocates for Type 1 diabetes research. Debbie George and Michelle Thornburg. They both have children that were born with Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that attacks the pancreas and deems a person dependent on insulin for life. There is no cure for this disease. It is nicknamed “the invisible disease” because suffers of Type 1 diabetes can appear to be the picture of health. Everyday activities can affect the blood sugar of those with the disease. Examples are: exercise, too much food, lots of activity, illness, and improper dosing of insulin. Some complications associated with Type 1 diabetes are: nerve, eye, kidney damage and cardiovascular disease. Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to amputations amongst other problems.

It was a very informative talk today. And we clearly need to continue research to find a cure for this malady.
